Consider booking children onto a forest school experience at the fantastic Children of the Forest just down the road. They have holiday and weekend activities. We've written about our experience here. |
Visit the nearby Culm River at Culmstock for some paddling, dam building and wild swimming (plus the very lovely Culm Valley Inn - we sometimes take a picnic and get drinks from there or you could eat there - food is very good). Plenty of beaches abound on the south Devon coast. Among our favourites are Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Exmouth. There are open air swimming pools at Clyst Hydon and Topsham too. |
Walk up in Blackborough's beautiful woods. I'm sure there are fairies there - the beech trees are bedecked with moss and in autumn you can find red and white spotty toadstools!. Try geocaching, have a great game of hide and seek or 40:40, take some sausages to cook for lunch in the fire pit area or find the remains of the tower. |
Book a pony ride at Sheldon Riding Centre and explore the beautiful Blackdown Hills on horseback. Cycling is a great option too (as long as you don't mind a few hills!). You could take your bikes to Haldon Forest near Exeter where there is also a Go Ape course. |
Go wild at the Bear Trail or Escot Wildwood.
The Bear Trail is an obstacle course in a field near Cullompton. Prepare to get muddy! Escot Wildwood is a woodland park near Honiton with a variety of native British wildlife including wolves, lynx, wild boar, otters and red squirrels alongside attractions such as a maze, Saxon village and drop slide. You can read all about the magic of Escot here. |
There are plenty of places nearby to see birds of prey - we have seen flight displays at World of Country Life, Escot, and Woodlands Family Theme Park to name but a few.
The best experience by far though has been a hands on half day at Yarak Birds of Prey near Cullompton. Read more about our experience and see some fantastic photos and videos here. |
"We had a fantastic stay in Buzzard Yurt. We were met by Mark in the Carpark. He showed us where the recycling and bathrooms were they were made of nice wood. It was my birthday and the white cat ate some of my cake. Lighting the fire was fun because we toasted marshmallows." Harriet (5)
