Cooking at Blackdown Yurts...

We think our facilities are great (and way better than camping and having to bring your own kit from home!). Here is what we provide and some ideas for what you can cook while on holiday:

Camp kitchens

Each yurt has its own camp kitchen newly refurbished in 2020. Each has a two-ring gas stove with oven, pots, pans, coffee pot, teapot, and enough mugs, plates, bowls, cutlery etc for its occupancy. 

Not only that but each yurt has its own Weber kettle BBQ with first night's supply of charcoal. Plus you have an outside fire pit on which to toast your complimentary marshmallows! 

Each yurt has a cold water stand pipe suitable for drinking and washing up (you can heat the water in your kettle or a saucepan if you like). We provide washing up liquid, a washing up sponge, J cloth and tea towels at the yurts and in the barn so no need to bring those.  

We also provide a cool box per yurt with two ice-blocks (these should be in the freezer compartment of your yurt's fridge in the barn when you arrive) so you can keep essentials such as milk cold at your yurt.

BUT it doesn't stop there - if you like a bit more sophistication in your kitchen hop along to the barn where you will find all mod cons...

Barn kitchen

The barn has three huge gas burning hobs - great for mass catering - a microwave, kettle, toaster, a fridge and fridge-freezer plus HOT water for washing up. Whoop whoop! ​New for 2020 is an electric oven too. We have updated the fridges for 2020 so each yurt now has it's own private small fridge with freezer compartment to minimise the risk of any contamination between guests. 

What to cook

Regarding what food to cook - well eggy bread and bacon is always a breakfast winner for me. We have had splendid meatballs in tomato sauce and pasta in the yurt barn. Sausages, mash (or fried tatties) and beans are always a failsafe.

BBQ obvs. Veysey's Butchers in Cullompton is a Devon award-winning butcher and plenty of local farm shops, including our nearest Fordmore, sell excellent meat - try Forest Beef in the middle of the Blackdowns for rare breed longhorn beef. The village shop in Kentisbeare also sells Veyseys meat alongside lots of other fabulous produce. 

​If you like fish, head to Beer and catch your own mackerel to cook over the fire: lip-smackingly good. Or buy fish fresh off the boats from the fish man as you near the bottom of the slope down to the sea.

Catering

We have several local caterers we can recommend including Field to Fork, The Ginger Pig, Soul Food and LAP food and bars. 

"Family holiday in August. What a lovely two weeks we had, perfect place to have a holiday. The yurts were beautiful, Katie and Mark were very welcoming and friendly. We loved the 'Bat Watch' Bbq's and roasting marshmallows on the open fire! The barn was an added bonus....lovely with the wood burner on and a glass of bubbles :)
