What is a Yurt? | Video of Yurt construction

A Yurt is a traditional shelter used by nomadics in Mongolia and Central Asia. They are also ideal for Camping in Devon!

Traditional nomadic yurts, from Mongolia, are designed to be quickly dismantled and the parts carried on camels or yaks to be rebuilt on another site.

Yaks are pretty hard to come by in Devon, so ours stay in the same place.

Each sits on its own decking base on a foundation of gravel to provide stability and good drainage. The polished wooden flooring is covered in coir matting to keep the interiors cosy.

The framework of yurts consists of wooden expanding lattice wall sections, made from larch with rawhide ties, held together with camel or horsehair ropes.

The roof is constructed of painted poles connected to a central crown wheel, which is supported by posts to the floor. Layers of thick felt, cotton and canvas provide the covering for the frame.
